Low-smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene(PP) is a polymer, which offers high resistance to fire. Since, halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene possesses environment-friendly stuffs, its demand is significantly high in the construction industry. With the increasing demand in wires and cables applications, the market is anticipated to witnessing significant growth in the years to come. Low-smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene finds major usage in the construction, electrical and electronics, and the automotive industries, owing to the high risk of fire spread in these industries, which can lead to a substantial loss of life and property. The construction industry has textured as the most important end-use industry in the global low smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene market.
As the high amount of flame retardant plastics and polymers offers thermal insulation to the commercial and residential buildings, its usage is increasing remarkably. Biodegradable low smoke halogen-free flame retardant polymers and composites are likely to offer significant growth opportunities to the vendors of low smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene across the world in the near future. Favourable government regulations are further anticipated to benefit the overall market. The government bodies across the globe have been formulating new regulations and safety norms to reduce the occurrence of fire mishaps.
Halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene is believed to be an effective way to overcome these fires maintaining the VOC levels. These regulations are mainly to ensure the quality of the product that can control the spread of fire or at least provide an extended escape time. Flame retardant PP provides an additional layer of protection against fire. However, high investment cost and development of other alternative products are anticipated to be the major factors which can affect the market growth. Further, environmental hazards related to halogenated flame retardants have forced governments across the globe to implement strict laws and regulations to discourage their usage.
By product type, the global low-smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene market can be segmented into IEC60332-1, IEC60332-2 and IEC60332-3. IEC 60332-1: Test for vertical flame spread for a single insulated wire or cable. This flame resistance test is passed by most cables built of flame-retardant materials, e.g. PVC and chloroprene rubber, or materials with special flame-retardant extracts such as PUR. In the test, a single cable or core with a length of approx. 60 cm is fixed vertically using two fixes, after which a pre-defined flame is applied to the bottom end for a period of 60 seconds (or 120 seconds in the case of cable diameters > 25 mm).
The test is deemed passed if, after the flame has been removed, the burning cable extinguishes itself and the fire damage is at least 50 mm from the upper mounting clamp. It is irrelevant how long the cable burns before turn off itself. IEC 60332-3: Test for vertical flame spread of vertically fixed with gathered cables or wires. This fire propagation test is also known as the "bundle fire test" and is usually only passed by specially advanced cables and wires with highly flame-retardant insulation and sheath material. This includes cables such as the ÖLFLEX® CLASSIC 110 H and ÖLFLEX® PETRO C HFFR. In most cases, the flame resistance of the plastics used is greatly enhanced by the addition of aluminium or magnesium hydroxide.
Multiple cables are bundled or layered in lengths of approx. 3.5 m and vertically affixed to a ladder-like metal structure, after which a flame is applied to the lower end of the cables using a propane burner. The test most frequently performed with our highly flame-retardant ÖLFLEX® cables is IEC 60332-3 Category C. IEC 60332-2 Category A is often used for maritime applications on oil rigs and ships, for example. The test is estimated to be passed if, after the burner has been switched off, the burning cables extinguish themselves and the fire damage does not cover more than 2.5 m measured from the bottom cable end. It is impossible to say which of the four test categories poses the most difficult challenge, since there are a range of different factors to consider.
As per application side, the global low-smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene market can be categorized into Construction, Automotive, Electrical & Electronics and Industrial. Construction industry dominated the low smoke halogen-free flame retardant market. Plastics are majorly used in the construction industry owing to their high durability, strength, and ease of cleaning and repairing. Low smoke halogen-free flame retardants are added to plastics, coatings and textiles to prevent or delay the spread of fire. Electrical & electronics industry is expected to be the fastest growing segment owing to use of flame retardant materials in electrical connectors, circuit boards and electrical cabinets and enclosures to ensure fire safety.
Growing electronics & electrical industry in China and Taiwan is expected to drive this segment over the forecast period. Industrial & domestic infrastructure demand owing to increase in disposable income & fast urbanization growth accompanied by government’s strict fire & safety regulations are among the key factors to drive demand in this segment. Metal replacements by polypropylene to reduce vehicle’s weight which eventually produce high fuel efficient cars were the key demand generating factor for automotive application. Automobiles sales growth joined with stringent vehicular emissions regulations may drive low smoke halogen free flame retardants polypropylene market.
In terms of region, the global low-smoke halogen-free flame retardant polypropylene market is divided into key regions such as North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World (RoW). North America accounted for the largest market share in the global low smoke halogen-free flame retardant market. The U.S. was the major contributor owing to EPA norms which phased out bromine based products that are highly toxic which has resulted in increased demand for these products. Europe held the second largest market share in the total low smoke halogen-free flame retardant market.
This regional market is anticipated to report steady rise in the near future, thanks to the significant rise in the automotive industry. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region owing to rapidly growing industrialization and urbanization in India and China.
