Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) also known as 5G Visible Light Communication systems, is a form of Visible Light Communications (VLC) system. The term Li-Fi was coined by Harald Haas during a TED Talk in 2011. Haas conceptualized light bulbs that could act as wireless routers. Simply, Li-Fi transfers data over light waves. Traditional Wi-Fi uses radio waves, whereas Li-Fi uses common household LED (light emitting diodes) light bulbs to enable data transfer, boasting speeds of up to 224 gigabits per second.
Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi, lesser in cost, and it requires no external power source as it operates with a glowing LED light. Similar to Wi-Fi, Li-Fi is wireless and uses 802.15 protocols; but it uses ultraviolet, infrared and visible light communication instead of radio frequency waves, which has a much bigger bandwidth. Light coming from LED bulbs acts as a carrier for data and can reach any device which is illuminated by it. The blinking of LED bulb creates signal for the receiver device and thereby transmitting data.
Li-Fi systems can be used in electromagnetic-sensitive areas where RF waves are absent, such as hospitals, aircrafts, and nuclear power plants, as it does not cause any electromagnetic interference. All these technical superiorities of Li-Fi over Wi-Fi technology drive its market in various applications such as retail, aerospace & defense, and indoor networking. These technical superiorities of LI-Fi over Wi-Fi are expected to fuel up the demand in the market during the next five to six years. Li-Fi uses light which cannot penetrate through walls and doors. This makes it more secure and makes it easier to control who can connect to your network.
Remotely underwater-operated vehicles use cables to transmit data. The length of cables limits the area ROVs can detect. As a light wave can travel through water, Li-Fi can be implemented on vehicles to receive and send back signals. Li-Fi system can be a better system to transmit information of patients. Vehicles can communicate with one another via front and back lights to increase road safety. Also street lights and traffic signals can provide information about current road situations. As Li-Fi can transmit in real-time, which is often required for automation processes, it is best alternative to common industrial Wireless LAN standards.
Geographically, the Global Li-Fi Devices market has been segmented into: North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Middle-East & Africa. North America shares the largest market due to the presence of various research and development facilities in the region and investment for implementation of this technology by the major companies in the region.
Asia Pacific is projected to grow significantly due to the presence of a large electronic market in China and Japan. In several developing regions governments promote the use of LED lights. Europe is expected to offer a huge platform for the growth of this market during the forecast period, as already established infrastructure offers great potential for growth across this region.
