Side shafts are also known as half shafts or intermediate shafts or Constant velocity (CV) shafts. A side shaft is primarily a drive axle. It comes in pairs. It is called half shaft because it does half of the job, extending from differential or transaxle. Side shafts should accommodate steering angle in front wheels and provide torsion to the chassis, allowing steering angles to offer isolating vibrations and suspension movements. Side shaft has two CV (Constant-velocity) joints; one is a fixed joint at the wheel end and a plunging joint at the gearbox end, which is usually connected by an interconnecting shaft. The primary function of an automotive side shaft is to provide an active connection between the driving wheels and the engine, it also allows to generate different steering angles while accommodating the suspension movements.
The isolation of vibration is also one of the prime function of the automotive side shaft in a vehicle. The merit of a constant velocity joint is that it can transfer rotation through various angles without any variations in drive shaft speeds.
